We Don’t Get to Choose
Audrey Cher is the best inspirational, gospel singer in Chicago, hands down.
Her listening party, sure to be one of the best in Chicagoland. The perfect venue, a new album about to drop, a talented songstress for sure, compared to the likes of Jill Scott, Lela Hathaway, and Chrisette Michele.
Yet, the highly anticipated listening party never happened. Why?
Nobody supported Audrey. Well, actually, her family didn’t support her.
Her family, doesn’t know how important it is to just show up, no amount of $$ to spend, just show up, no venues to rent, just show up, no food to cater or buy, just show up, no albums to buy, just show up.
What is it about supporting family who step out on faith that people don’t get? Personally, I am massively thankful for the support and kudos I continue to receive from family and friends. Yet, unfortunately, there are key people in my life, special people, close to me who don’t support my efforts, nor do they understand what I’m doing in putting myself and my talents out into the universe.
It’s a scary place to be.
Those of us who constantly and consistently put ourselves out there, out in the limelight, out in the atmosphere, not knowing whether or not we’ll be ridiculed, accepted, loved or talked about.
Did I say scary?
When you love your craft and know your skill you do it anyway. You do it because you know it’s your place to be in the world. You do it because you know your talent is going to bless someone, help someone, make the difference between life and death to someone.
You do it because you know some body gotta step up, step out, and put themselves on the line for the masses.
Still, family can sometimes be the closest, yet at the same time, the farthest away from us. Do you have a family member who just doesn’t get you? A family member who says things that are so out of line with the essence of who you are?
Unfortunately, we don’t get to choose our biological family. But we do get to choose our reactions. We do get to choose our reality. And we do get to choose love, even if from a distance. Sometimes that’s just how it has to be. And sometimes that is the best way.
Now that brings it back around to you.
Are you the family support, the crutch, the rock, or the kill-joy? It’s not too late to make a new choice. For yourself or your family.
